Preparing for a transition

Optional · you can skip these

Preparing together, not preparing them

The aim is a shared plan they had a hand in, rather than a handover you deliver.

From The Steve Fund: Guide for Parents: Helping Your Student Navigate College Campus Support Resources · Honoring vs. Acknowledging Newfound Independence in Your College Student

  1. A way to open it

Open communication is essential. Encourage your student to share their feelings about college life, including any stress or challenges they are facing.

  2. Practical things worth agreeing

Discuss scenarios they might face and how they might handle them, including who to talk to and where to go for help.

  3. What to leave to them

Creating an environment in which they feel welcomed, respected and able to continue to grow

  4. One next step

Maybe we could come up with some ideas together about what to do when things get rough.

For you only

  • As a parent, staying informed about the resources available on your child’s campus is important. Visit the campus website or contact administrative offices to gather information about the support services offered.
